Although the Shiver 750 has not met with great success, Aprilia is not abandoning its mid-size roadster. Quite the contrary: it reinforces it in displacement. The new episode is called 900 Shiver and allows the Italian brand to try again the lightning contact with the battle of the middle.
Yamaha MT-09 and Kawasaki Z 900 hold the main positions, from the top of their imposing volume and their sales figures. In Noale, time allowed us to ask the right questions and then bring the necessary to the Shiver to return to the load step.
Let’s start by taking care of the engine. To achieve 896 cm3 cubing, we increased the piston stroke, 11 mm, without affecting the bore. The silhouette of the Shiver has changed. Less sharp, less ethereal, less childish, a little more provocative, it still retains a memory of the fashion of the 2000s with its silencers under the saddle. Except they got rounded. The 900 Shiver clearly wants to show that it is changing generation, with an engine spoiler that fills its stomach better, a good layer of additional black on the swingarm and the engine, however with spicy red cylinder head covers, redesigned sides and whereïes, and to conclude a brand new instrument cluster. The TFT technology allows it to display a beautiful color screen, with multiple information to the key. The dashboard will flatter the eye and the pilot, not to mention that it comes directly from the new RSV4 1000 RR and Tuono V4 1100 RR. It gets worse ;-).
When the Shiver 750 was released, it was not pretending on the chassis side with its structure combining aluminum plates and tubular steel trellis structure. Aprilia kept it, as well as its aluminum swingarm. On the other hand, we added a new Kayaba inverted fork of 41 mm, lighter by half a kilo, adjustable in rebound and preload. This is followed by new 3-spoke rims to emphasize the sporty style and lighten the balance. The front wheel loses 900 grams and the rear 1300 grams. 2.2 kilos of gained on the unsprung mass, here is which will clearly boost the agility of the machine.
On the brakes side, we lost the petals in the perimetry of the discs but not the endowment. Two 320 mm wafers with 4-piston calipers at the front + 1 240 mm discs with single-piston caliper at the rear + a 2-channel ABS.
The second volume of the Shiver promises to be more biting than the first. More displacement to offer above all more energy than muscle, a more bellicose aspect, enhanced dynamic performance and electronics that are enriched without falling into overbidding. Let’s not start without mentioning Aprilia’s multimedia platform with optional Bluetooth connectivity, among the carbon and aluminum parts and various touring elements. However, hunting in the lands of MT, Z, Monster and GSX-S will not yet be an easy mission. The 900 Shiver must try its luck, and score as much as it likes.
