that was the elegant version that a charming Ducati Airlines hostess could serve you. A version closer to reality would rather be: "Oh damn ! How this 1098 R is going to send furious people. It’s crazy crazy stuff …!"
Indeed, it’s big crazy stuff. The R is not a racing version of the 1098 but a big modification ultra typical Superbike, with a weight / power ratio that will stun you.
As usual for the R versions of the Bologna hypersports, we find an inverted fork Öhlins, with (since the appearance of the 1098) Brembo monobloc type radial brake calipers supported by 330 mm brake tracks, as well as a shock absorber from the same manufacturer, but an exclusive model called TTXr. This suspension element directly benefits from the experience acquired by öhlins in MotoGP.
Where the R version goes wrong more than one, it is on the deep modifications of the twin Testastretta Evoluzione. From the name you thought it’s a 1098cc rumble in the tubular trellis ??? Nay. Ducati intends to take full advantage of the new 2008 Superbike regulations (see MP news of 06/16/2007). Result: 2 mm more bore, a stroke that passes 67.9 mm and presto, the twin inflates to 1198 cm3. And the racing department did not do things by halves. the 1098 R boiler uses the same components that will be used for the SBK 1098 F08 racing version. The titanium valves have a diameter of 44.3 mm at the intake and 36.2 mm at the exhaust. Maximum effort saved weight wherever possible. Thus, the cylinder head covers are in magnesium, the pistons are 130 grams lighter than in the standard 1098, and one can find elements in carbon on the periphery of the engine. Thanks to this, we gained 3.5 kg on the twin; and compared to the carton of the 999 R, it is 6.5 kg less.
Well, this technique is very nice … But what’s the big crazy thing ?
That’s it : 180 horses for 165 kg ! This sports car, which can be found at the dealership, will spit as much power as the official 996 RS world champion from Fogarty in 1999. Not only has the Ducati become the lightest of the hypersports but it is also now the most powerful (the displacement helps a lot). The torque now peaks at 13.7 mkg. Suffice to say that on the track, the competition will start to worry a lot..
This is without counting the bonuses reserved for us by electronics. Considering the pack of cannons jostling in the moulbif, Ducati has planned and provides a racing kit including a pair of Termignoni carbon silencer at 102 dB and a small electronic chip. Once installed, the pilot can take advantage of the new DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL. Yes: this Ducat ‘is equipped with a traction control system as in a Superbike. This is what will allow you to stop wheeling all the time and put the maximum power on the ground.
And to analyze all this, the R is equipped with the DDA (Ducati Data Analyzer) data acquisition system allowing you to analyze your performance on the circuit on a PC, as on the S version (and optional on the standard).
By dint of putting competition pieces in it, Ducati has managed to offer a real Superbike machine as standard. After all, the factory already sells a production MotoGP, the Desmocedici RR. And with the title of world champion in his pocket, the department "Corsica" is not ready to be unemployed.
