The stroke of the pencil that gave birth to the 916 was genius. Once produced, this motorcycle entered the pantheon of legendary motorcycles. Scented at the Superbike, the machines running there will bring glory to Fogarty, Corser, Bayliss, Xaus, Bostrom…
In 1998, it changed to 996. In reality, only the engine changed. It inflates its displacement to provide more torque in mid-range. And it works: it goes up to 9.6 mkg at 7000 rpm. Power wins too, grabbing 7 hp at a lower rpm.
Around, nothing changes, and that’s good. The fabulous dress still conceals the lattice frame. Everything that sparked the passion remains on the 996: single-sided, pots under the saddle, solid Showa inverted fork. And everything that makes its character and its exclusivity. The high seat (very) is as restrictive as possible, with tortured wrists and spartan comfort. When driving, the machine must be entered with authority in the curves. but once set on the angle, it’s a rail.

The twin desmoquattro is not a model of flexibility but is on fire. And that noise …! Cavernous, trippy, a melody of a wild animal.
Owners of 916 will lose a handful of 100ths of a second on the track. Because apart from the inflated mill, everything is identical on the 2 machines. Silhouette, slenderness, chassis and peripherals – it’s the same and there is nothing to complain about because the level is already very high. Thus, a 996 will not be a radical change for its users. Everything is there: the pleasure of piloting a prestigious machine, testing and imposing sacrifices to the pilot, but offering unique sensations and not watered down … this is the claw of a 996 !
