After nearly 10 years of loyal service, and above all a huge commercial success, Honda’s turbulent roadster is giving way to a whole new generation. Arranged, refined, significantly revised several times, the 600 Hornet has remained faithful to the original design without changing its philosophy. In 2007, a surprisingly designed machine hit the streets.
Visually thinner and more compact, the new CBF stands out from the one from which it takes over. Honda has finally let go of the design, and it is certainly the headlight-meter unit that benefits the most. Bye bye the round headlight if motorcycle; hello manga optics. This very stylish set will undoubtedly become the new signature of the Hornet. What a face! And above the now unavoidable inverted fork with radial brake calipers, it imposes.
But if you scratch a little, some small details bother us. This speedometer for example … The face (entirely electronic) devoted to information looks like a version close to that of the CBR 600 RR, adapted to a block of roadster. Very well ; but from the front, what resemblance to that of the … Kawasaki 650 ER-6n. And this exhaust ??? And yes, it is very reminiscent of the Yamaha R6. Let’s get out of the Japanese world a bit, come back to France, and … To believe that the rear seems to be signed Voxan, so much it is similar to that of the Roadster. Worse references are known – but it surprises Honda. However, shock and surprise seems in the specifications of the Hornet 2007.
Honda started almost from scratch to re-create the 600 hornet. 2 things remain but with serious optimization: the frame and the engine.
The first Hornet inaugurated a new type of frame: the mono-backbone – a kind of backbone with an upper end of the cradle at the front – a rigid structure, making it possible to particularly highlight the boiler. Now, no more welded steel! The new, lighter frame is an evolution of this scheme, in die-cast aluminum. The swingarm, also in aluminum, is new, looks better, seems much more rigid, and grows by 5 mm.
Throughout its career, and even until the last generation, the Hornet was powered by a block of CBR 600 … 1997 model. The one we have in front of us immediately recovers the block of the 2007 CBR 600 RR. Advertised for more than 100 horsepower, lighter, more compact, this boiler has obviously been revised for more torque and availability at mid-range. The injection presented here is the latest version of the PGM-FI, guaranteeing top-notch engine behavior. Hopefully, because with more super-square dimensions and peak torque at a higher revs of 1000 rpm, this mill seems sharp; finally, on paper.
These essential points from the most recent Honda technologies are largely responsible for the 5 kg that the Hornet has lost. The agility will be increased tenfold, especially as a significant effort on the distribution of the masses (hence the pot under the engine) has been made.
Even wilder, the hornet 07 is also a good protector: an ABS is provided as an option, and its pollution control is much more severe than that required by Euro 3. Standards which have imposed a non-aesthetic gas plenum chamber, that Honda stashed as best it could under the lower left side of the 4 cylinder. Well, we’re not always with our noses in the heat either…
As we change everything essential, we might as well change everything else. In this new chapter, let’s mention the new tank with the largest capacity (19 L), a new LED tail light, a redesigned saddle, new aluminum alloy wheels with 5 hollow spokes, and some options for more. more highlight the boy. For braking, the manufacturer relies on the same system as before, two discs at the front of 296 mm and a disc of 240 at the rear. Note that the caliper of the latter is new, more compact.
The development concept of the new Hornet was simple: to make this street-fighter the benchmark in its class, not by improving everything that could be improved, but by creating a new machine. Honda announces an exciting weight / power ratio, incisive handling and a fierce image to say the least. In fact, the same cocktail as the original, except that the 2007 version has everything to do it much better.
