Pretty much everything has been written about the Goldwing. The culmination of the GT concept, few people find it faulty, except for a crippling price; but ultimately in line with its claims. Certainly, it lacks certain treats that can be found in the competition (Harley infotainment or the technological armada of a BMW K 1600 GTL Exclusive). It will be for the next generation … right? ?!?
And the GL has been traveling the roads for 40 years now. We have to celebrate this ! This will be the mission of this special edition "40th anniversary", which is distinguished by its red dress separated from the black by a silver border. A paint technician took the opportunity to get excited about black by affixing it to the engine, rims, exhausts, fork, swingarm and frame. Inscriptions specific to this anniversary can be found on the saddle, the fairing, and in the wink of an eye on the ignition keys.
Not enough to change the driving experience but to salute almost half a century of Grand Tourism. For the pleasure of driving, it’s hard to beat this immense fairing which protects you from the vagaries of terrestrial thermodynamics, this voluptuous flat 6-cylinder 118 horsepower and 17 mkg, these 150 liters of luggage and these high-ranking road capacities.
To accompany you, sound system radio – 6 HP – 80 W – iPod / USB / MP3 compatibility, heated saddle and grips (and foot warming system via deviation of the hot air flow from the engine), electric reverse gear, regulator speed, manually adjustable windshield, Honda GPS in the Airbag version, imperturbable chassis and prestige at the height..
The history of the Goldwing:
1972: the origins
A team of engineers is formed with, at its head, the famous Soichiro Irimajiri, who created the famous 5 and 6 cylinder racing cylinders of the 1960s. His team will develop the M1, an ultra-secret prototype designed to explore the limits of the Grand Touring concept applied to motorcycles. The M1 already had a flat 6 cylinder and a shaft drive, characteristics that will be taken over a few years later on the Gold Wing.
1975: GL 1000 Gold Wing
The first Gold Wing is a revolution, opening up new perspectives for lovers of long-distance travel. Powered by a revolutionary 999cc liquid-cooled flat 4-cylinder, the GL1000 offers performance and a level of refinement never before achieved in the two-wheel world. From then on, Gold Wing owners set out to redefine the basics of Grand Touring, driving further and more comfortably than ever, reassured by a machine which, since its early days, has enjoyed a reputation for exceptional reliability. In 1976, Honda celebrated this success with a Gold Wing “Limited Edition” while in 1979, the first Gold Wing production plant was inaugurated in the United States in response to the fact that 80% of the machines produced so far were exported to this country.
1980: GL 1100 Gold Wing & GL 1100 Gold Wing Interstate
Where the GL1000 defied categorization with its blend of sporty performance and top-flight comfort, the GL1100 – the result of 5 years of user research – clearly positions the Gold Wing as the ultimate LA GT. Its engine, increased to 1,085 cm3, favors torque rather than power, while the extended wheelbase allows more stability and more room for the rider and his passenger. Air-assisted suspensions set new standards in road quality as the Interstate version introduces for the first time the concept of a “turnkey” GT with its full fairing, suitcases and original top case.
1982: GL 1100 Gold Wing Aspencade
With the Aspencade, Honda adds the notion of luxury to that of Grand Touring. The original equipment abounds, like the digital dashboard, the stereo system, the CB or the integrated pneumatic compressor.
1985: GL 1200 Limited Edition
The year 1985 was marked by the cessation of production of the standard GL1200 (without fairing), in favor of the GL1200 Limited Edition, a complete machine with its electronic fuel injection, its 4-speaker audio system, its regulator. speed, auto-adjustable rear suspension, on-board computer and metallic gold paint.
1988: GL 1500 Gold Wing
In 1984, a new team of engineers began working on the future Gold Wing. Their specifications are demanding, to say the least, since the new machine had to be better in all aspects: silent operation, flexibility, power and road handling. Thousands of hours would be spent testing 15 machines and 60 prototypes, which was the most extensive development ever in Honda history at the time. These efforts will materialize in the form of a luxurious 6-cylinder machine, a machine so accomplished that it would set the standards in the category for more than a decade..
2001: GL 1800 Gold Wing
After 8 years of development, the GL1800 carries the Gold Wing name even higher. Designed by Masanori Aoki’s team, whose track record includes machines as outstanding as the CBR250RR, CBR400RR or CBR600F3, the Gold Wing 1800 is causing a sensation: "My job was to add more fun to the machine, to build a Gold Wing capable of the acceleration and dynamic qualities that are more commonly associated with sport bikes." explains Aoki.
Several engines were tested and then phased out before the GL1800 was finally launched in 2001 with its flat 6 installed in an aluminum double beam frame to give pride of place to stability, agility and ease of driving. During the development period of this new GL1800, no less than 20 technological advances will be developed and patented..
2006: GL1800 Gold Wing "Airbag", a world first
The 2006 vintage Gold Wing is the world’s first production motorcycle to feature an airbag system. Instrumentation and lighting have also been revised.
2011: New lines
The Gold Wing benefits from new lines developed under the aegis of the concept "majestic aggression". The bike’s legendary balance and liveliness are echoed in new lines that are at once elegant, dynamic and imposing. Cargo capacity is increased to 150 liters and the new 6-speaker audio system offers several connectivity solutions.
