Kawasaki Z 1000 2004

September 2002 – Munich fair. Kawa jostles, surprises, disconcerts … Here is the Z 1000. Visual shock. The new Kawasaki roadster is unlike any other: stocky, torn with sharp angles, equipped with a minimalist fork crown and a surprising personality underlined by its famous 4 exhaust flutes.

The Z 1000 is without concessions: love it or hate it … but the eye cannot remain insensitive. A rough face, a hypersport engine releasing 144 hp, and an advertised dry weight of 186 kg. Good god, how are you ch…

But once in the street, the picture has changed. The re-bored block of the ZX-9 R displays only 127 hp. What happened ? According to the Japanese engineers, the 4 pretty exhaust flutes eat up a lot of power. Aesthetic but penalizing. Let’s slow down a little longer. The inverted fork is superb but the compression adjustment is only done on a sleeve. And then there is also … Well, OK, I stop.
This new roadster is dynamite. The design surprises, captivates the eye, a mixture of tuning and aggressiveness. It’s simple, there is nothing to add, nothing to take away. The half-painted half-polished rims alone are a mixture of extravagance and class. In the saddle, we are not at the end of surprises. The dashboard is none other than that of the ZX-6RR, all digital, but no time to have fun with it. Immediately, the second shock: the machine seems incredibly compact. The very refined tank at the crotch is totally forgotten despite its tortuous shapes. The pretty aluminum handlebars call the hands, the pilot settles in an attacking position, compassionate for the wrists and unequivocal on the vocation of the Z: fun, sport, and as its look has already made you understand, a nice dose of hard rock. Do not see the replacement for the ZRX 1200. It is more exclusive, more playful, and very different engine sensations..

Contact ! The 4-legged does not make a splash, castrated by its exhausts more aesthetic than melodious. This is in slow motion, it will change in a short time. The first turns of the wheels are done with total relaxation: you immediately feel at ease and the machine is manoeuvrable. She points in a handkerchief. A small stretch of highway will be an unnamed ordeal: protection is non-existent, we take everything in the face, and the jacket is not at the party. Quickly, we get out and we rush to assault the mountain. First virolos and questions: where are the horses? Not that the ZX-9R’s reamed block is anemic, but from a 1000cc, we expect more trunk. I fall 2 reports that the box passes with precision and the mill is revealed more generously. Pushing more frankly towards 6000 revs, it becomes fiery and powerful after the 8000 revs, with a thunderous noise. At this rate, he growls, pushes, goes into ecstasy, revealing his resentment: it is indeed a Kawa mechanism. Give it up for big muscle on any diet. The Z 1000, you have to drive it with a nervous drive, use the gearbox without restraint … Hey, you wouldn’t believe that you were driving an XJR 1300. And besides, it vibrates on this bike. The design office seemed to have priority over that of comfort. Thus, the Z is built on a Diamond-type frame whose engine provides part of the rigidity. And as the boiler has no balancing pendulum, it lets you share its palpitations.

Now you start to understand where the Z 1000 is going. Combined with the progressiveness of the suspensions, we enter the curves quite quickly, then the machine signs in with a gesture, almost all by itself, reacting even before the brain has given the order. The engine maintained in the towers, we come out of the pin with ease, ease, and it starts again like a bullet. A quick word about the retros: discreet and efficient (from the cockpit), they are totally forgotten while driving but a simple glance brings out the essential reflection to monitor your rear.
With this Z 1000, Kawa has taken no gloves. The manufacturer of Akashi offers a motorcycle with a strong visual identity, agile and virulent as it is not allowed, and with a character of small moth. A machine with a formidable chassis that deserves an additional dose of gniak. And why ? Play … with the gas, the gearbox, the brakes, the clutch – Yes, a toy that you are not ready to fall asleep or get tired of !
