The official Honda team, heavily penalized on the fourth stage following a non-compliant refueling, signs its first double on the Dakar motorcycle 2017 thanks to Ricky Brabec and Paulo Goncalves.

The two HRC riders had a superb sprint ahead of Sam Sunderland (KTM) on the seventh stage, which marks the second part of the rally..

Sam Sunderland opened the 7th day of the Dakar motorcycle, including the due to the torrential rains that fell in Bolivia. Downpours already at the origin of the amputation of the, then the cancellation of the sixth stage scheduled for Saturday. From 322 km at the start, the seventh special was finally disputed over only 161 km, a real sprint to be covered in the sand.

On paper, nothing too bad for experienced rally-men, but the reality on the ground is quite different … On the one hand, because this day is in "marathon" format, that is to say without assistance in the evening at the bivouac: bikers must spare their mounts to avoid "mechanizing" all evening by correcting an error of optimism. The French Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha) for example paid the price: well started, the northerner fell without gravity at the bottom of a dune but twisted his handlebars in the operation.

Le repaired as best he could to reach the finish in ninth place, 10’52 behind the leader. Fortunately, the n ° 6 retains his third place in the provisional but his delay on the leading man goes to 22’16. The leader of the classification, in fact, remains Sam Sunderland on KTM: the Briton managed to limit the damage after being lost at km 38. Navigation still played the leading role during the day and the KTM official was the first to pay the price…

The n ° 14 was thus not unhappy to see the Honda of Paulo Goncalves and Ricky Brabec, launched to the bottom of the hold on the right track. ! In the end, the with 1’44 ahead of its experienced Portuguese teammate: a race worthy of a speed race! Brabec wins his first Dakar victory in his second participation () and becomes the sixth different winner in as many stages contested! Sunderland finished the day in 4th place at 4’43, ahead of Joan Barreda and her water carrier Michael Metge.

Pierre-Alexandre Renet (Husqvarna) is 11th on the stage and 7th overall, 1.02’37 behind the leader. His compatriot Xavier de Soultrait, initially 5th for the day despite a crash, finally fell back to 14th after a 6-minute penalty received for showing up late at the start of the special. His teammate Helder Rodrigues is also penalized for the same reason. De Soultrait is sixth in the provisional 44’33 behind the leader on his Yamaha.

In the stage classification, the viscount precedes Stefan Svitko, who received a one hour penalty last week for non-compliant refueling like the Honda riders. The Slovak, shining on his KTM, points to a distant 18th position in the provisional, almost two o’clock of the leader (1.57’26) …

In the provisional general classification, Sam Sunderland still leads ahead of Pablo Quintanilla’s Husqvarna, only 8th at 10’28 at the finish. The Chilean,, let precious minutes slip by on this stage, which will not favor his objective not completely assumed of final victory (see the statements below).

Return to Argentina via a "bis" route

The eighth day of racing scheduled for Tuesday forms a loop back to Argentina. With an initial length of 892 km including 492 km of special, it will finally take place on a course again modified and amputated due to the mud formed by thunderstorms, which makes some tracks impassable and crossing a river completely impossible..

"The consequences of the precipitation in recent days have forced the race management to modify the route of stage 8: the rising water levels in a river that the competitors had to cross thus lead to the neutralization of the first part of the day’s special. at CP1, or at km 174 ", specifies the organizer.

Dakar - Dakar moto 2017: report, declarations and classifications of stage 7 -

"The competitors will then join the start of the second part of the special, located at the Bolivian-Argentinian border, by a new 176 km link. Following these modifications, the initial special is reduced by 73 km. After a first link of 49 km, the competitors will thus embark on a special of 171 km before the neutralization of 176 km. The second part of 246 km remains unchanged ", explains ASO.

"At the end of this, the competitors will have 350 km to complete to reach the bivouac of Salta. For trucks, the day’s special will stop at CP1. All the competitors will then join Salta on a link. Note that the classification at CP1 will give the starting order for stage 9 of Super Belem "

Dakar moto – stage 7: statements

Ricky Brabec – Honda: "I wanted to do better than last week, which was hard for me and for the whole team because we made a mistake (refueling outside the authorized zone, Editor’s note). There is still a good week, which can bring us good things. . I was pretty close (to victory, editor’s note) the first day, I even had my chance on the second stage… I’m really proud of myself. Currently I’m around 20th place, so I would like to get closer to the Top 10. Even if my initial objective was to aim for the Top 5. We will see how it goes ".

Paulo Goncalves – Honda : "It was not a long stage but it was very difficult, there was a lot of navigation, especially from km 90 on. I tried to attack to reach Sam Sunderland from the start, but you had to be very attentive to the road-book. I caught up with it after 6 or 7 kilometers. I also wanted to preserve my motorbike, because we are in a marathon stage. And there it is perfect since it is in good condition, I just need a refueling. I’m going to keep fighting to recover, after the penalty I took two days ago. The goal is to do the best I can every day and try to climb in the standings. But to progress, I will also have to rely on the mistakes of others ".

Sam Sunderland – KTM: “Quite happy, because it was a lot harder than I expected. I was happy to hear that the special was reduced, because I had to open the track, but in fact it was very hard. had a lot of vegetation which made it difficult to see the track clearly. It was also very physical riding in all that mud, it made the race interesting. I might have made a few navigation errors, but I can see, the minutes go by and I think the others also made mistakes too ".

Pablo Quintanilla – Husqvarna : "It was a short stage but also very intense, difficult, especially because it was very cold when we left this morning. I tried to stay focused on my road-book, and also to preserve my bike since we are in the marathon stage tonight. But I am happy with this result, and it is very good to keep this position. Of course, I want to win this race, but I especially want not to think about it too much, I I have to keep my cool first and foremost. I’ll do whatever I can to make it happen, but we’ll see. "
