Hobby racers who keep their eyes and ears open can pick up a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 from many dealers at an affordable price due to the low demand and the upcoming model change. The only question then is, with what means the fighting strength of the old lady can be awakened and whether it will be enough to show off in race training.

If you look at Klaus Bretters Gixxer like that, it seems to be enough! The tuner originally built the Suzi for long haul. In his opinion, the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 not only offers a good basis for increasing performance, the technician also likes the motorcycle due to its solid mechanics and screwdriver-friendliness.

Apparently, old ships teach you to sail. With this Suzuki GSX-R 1000 from Bretter, sailing is particularly brisk.

That the new Suzuki GSX-R 1000 is in the starting blocks is no longer a secret. In 2016 it should finally come, the Gixxer with at least 200 hp and an electronics offensive. It is high time, because the last attack command from Hamamatsu rang out in 2009 and has since faded into nothing. Nevertheless, there is potential in the graying Suzi, the SERT team is currently proving it again in the World Endurance Championship with the championship lead after three of four races.

Compression slightly increased compared to the series

After one of the originally intended riders fell at the beginning of the year and as a result the board endurance project could not get started, the thousands are now available as a sprint motorcycle at TunerGP 2015. That actually only means that the long-distance tank gives way to the conventional one had to. With a total weight of 181.5 kilos, the Bretter-Suzuki GSX-R 1000 proves an advanced fitness level. The 2016 PVM wheels including brake discs save 1.5 kilos at the front and almost two kilos at the rear. In addition, Bretter trusts in Yoshimura for many accessories. The wiring harness from Suzuki’s own house-and-yard tuner alone weighs five kilos less than the original. Also included are a multiple adjustable traction control and an adjustable engine brake. On top of that, the control unit, head gasket with locking wedges, camshafts and the deflection system are also from Yoshimura. Compared to the series, the compression is slightly higher and the crankshaft has been finely balanced.

You notice the latter conversion measure first when rolling out, because the engine of the boards Suzuki GSX-R 1000 runs wonderfully smooth and almost free of vibrations. It already pulls strongly from the middle speed range, but develops its power in a linear and predictable way. Around 8000 rpm, things get noticeably more violent and the engine pushes on up to 13,000 rpm with elemental force! The four-in-line engine delivers so much pressure in a wide range of engine speeds that you can go up or down a gear in the same curve without any problems. Fine spirits, on the other hand, are disturbed by the slight "pitching moment" when applying the gas.

"Price-performance ratio at Arrow is just right "

When it comes to the exhaust system, Bretter relies on a racing manifold with a muffler from Arrow. “The price-performance ratio at Arrow is just right,” says Klaus. In any case, the test bench attests to 198 HP on the crankshaft and proves it to be right. If you take a closer look at Bretters Endurance Racer in spe, you notice less pronounced load changes with reduced engine braking. This makes it easier to brake the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 into curves.

The boards Suzuki GSX-R 1000 with its Mupo chassis lies like a board in the radius itself, and thanks to the generous amount of space, the ergonomics are ideal for long journeys. At this point, one notices the advanced age of its construction. When it comes to handling, representatives of the current superbike generation behave more snappily.

Suzuki GSX-R 1000 equals scrap iron?

The Bretter-Suzuki GSX-R 1000 does not drive so naturally "on the last groove" over the front wheel, tends to push on the further line and therefore cannot be accelerated quite so early at the exit of the curve. "Up to a certain point the GSX-R works really well," says Arne Tode. But if you want to push for another two or three seconds, the ex-Moto2 pilot believes that it will be difficult: “The engine is really great, has a wide speed range, no performance drop and the machine is very stable when braking. The fork is too hard for me at the bottom, which means that there is no feedback and trust in the front wheel in the last third. "

The professional can therefore not "undercut" the curves as he would have liked. Regarding the exit from the Omega of the Sachsenring, Arne also complains that the rear is working a little too hard, which is probably due to the fact that the boarded Suzuki GSX-R 1000 cannot be fired quite as tightly out of the curve. At this point the racer is already driving under 1.30 minutes, which of course he did not say directly. A hobby pilot has to get there first. Suzuki GSX-R 1000 equal to scrap iron? Bretters Gixxer hardly!
