So where was I? Ah yes … Norton has been considering his return for a number of years. 35 years that the Commando no longer roamed when it left the factory. For its return, the form and the substance are made with the superb “vintage” roadster 961 Commando SE … in limited series, expensive, with carbon and Öhlins, and above all a legendary name (la Manx, does that ring a bell?!?).

Now that the English brand has returned to the market, in the very sympathetic niche of “classics”, it is time to build up a range. The first stone having been laid with the resurrection of the Commando, Norton now declines its version for the general public. Here is the 961 Commando Sport. Very similar to the SE, it nevertheless differs from it with a few less noble elements. No more carbon parts. On the other hand, the superb suspensions Öhlins remain. It is rare and somewhere fascinating to admire the classic appearance of its suspension (standard fork, dual rear shock absorber), yet equipped with very modern performance and technology. Elements of choice, modern, prestigious, whose design is in perfect harmony with the authentic silhouette of this roadster.

It was in Italy that Norton went to get his braking. No radial for the calipers but Brembo with 4 pistons “gold line edition” and discs of 320 mm. Wouldn’t that be a bit too much to stop this machine? The 961 Commando is far from slamming hypersports lap times. But for a machine of almost 20,000 euros, we are entitled to expect quality peripherals. Witness its magnificent rims with chrome spokes.

And then there is this engine. Can you feel that passion fluttering behind this heart-shaped casing? Under these cooling fins hides a twin with an intoxicating sound. Its 80 horses are not the most important; the name, the silhouette, the existence of this bike are much more so. From the Triumph Bonneville through the Thruxton to arrive at this Commando, we say to ourselves that the beautiful English are back.
