The scrambler, in its concept, is more or less the ancestor of the trail. He announced the time of laughter and of the fields in a distant time. It has changed a lot today. Voxan has brought it up to date, BMW has given it a premium cachet by deriving it from the NineT, Triumph is rocking it into opulence, with its 1200 Scrambler.
900 or 1200, the silhouette is common for all Scramblers of the brand. It is undeniable and logical that the big one stands out with more presence, an enhanced finish, a more opulent appeal. Even more advanced on the XE, where the colors are more rewarding, the equipment richer, and the capacities reinforced. When the XC turns left to follow a stony path, this brother will branch off to the right, on trails where surprises meet the unknown.
It has what it takes for: the suspension travel goes to 250 mm, or 50 more. An exceptional value for the category, even more important that of the big trails designed for adventure. Showa inverted fork and shocks Öhlins will have a great job in anticipation for the multiple occasions of drifts, swerves, crossings, potholes and all that can await you between the trees and the lampposts.
It really smacks of off-road, with that retro feel that the brand excels at cultivating. The appreciation of beautiful things goes with it, a certain requirement too. More sliding for the suspensions, more ground clearance, this leads to a rise in the saddle. Perched at 870 mm from the ground, the seat is not within the reach of all sizes. The Scrambler XE is also distinguished by an increased search for stability with a longer wheelbase (1570 mm) than on the XC (1530 mm), mainly thanks to a longer swingarm. The weight shows a small gain of 2 kilos, with 207 units.
A golden finish for the fork, a more flattering appearance on the handlebars, hand guards with standard aluminum reinforcement, heated grips, a Brembo MCS brake lever, that is what enhances the perceived quality. This also announces a surplus in electronic equipment. Like an inertial unit, allowing the ABS and traction control to be more responsive in curves.
To the 5 driving modes already present on the XC (Road – Rain – Sport – Off-Road- customizable), the XE adds the Off-Road Pro (off-road typed settings, deactivation of ABS and traction control) . In short, she wants to be more adventurous. A baron of Upper England wanting to cross his lands, his rivers, happy to return with the suit full of mud.
Same siblings, same engine. The 1200 cc twin delivers 90 horsepower and 11.2 mkg of torque. Whatever the version, we find on this road-off-road motorcycle a specific tubular steel frame, 21 and 17 inch spoked rims, raised exhausts, 320 mm brake discs, an aluminum shoe, a Monza-type tank cap, a steel tank strap, folding foot controls and a good dose of elements ensuring its high-end identity.
The amortos Öhlins whet your appetite? The Brembo M50 brake calipers will confirm, the high-definition TFT screen will appeal, the on-board package is demonstrative: keyless start, backlit controls, cruise control, USB port, control joystick, full LED lighting, visual signature daytime running, coded immobilizer, simplified GPS on the screen via a smartphone app, and in the options, tire pressure monitoring as well as control of a GoPro or the main functions of a phone (calls, music, ….) via Bluetooth.
With its 1200 Scramblers, Triumph sets off in style. A bit of road in XC, much more intrepid in XE coupled with a rich endowment. The manufacturer is continuing its quest for premium and self-confident motorcycles. On the other hand, if a trail presents itself as the democratic all-purpose machine, the English scrambler knocks out the wallet. Almost 16,000 euros, that’s more than hesitating.
