With the Speedmaster, Triumph offered a custom worthy of British phlegm, with the right amount of relaxation, posture and dawdling. The 865cc twin was pushing with kindness, a certain decanter, and we didn’t ask for more. All of this is swept aside by the new 1200 Speedmaster.
Because Triumph 1200 Bobber and Speedmaster are closely related. They share chassis and engine without any discomfort of inbreeding. Perfect for lovers of looks and emotions, who are sure to appreciate the deceptively hardtail frame. The triangulated swingarm seems fixed on the rear part while Triumph has taken care to hide the shock absorber under the saddle. Initiated on the Bobber, this suspension strikes as much the eye on the new Speedmaster. Can we conclude that this would only be a Bobber with 2 places? Not so much, not sure. The low-rider that interests us hear more of the definition of cruising than that of a showbike.
Lady, the Speedmaster has its own identity, which clearly differentiates it from the Bonneville and the Bobber. The first is melted in its role of classic roaster, the second is perfect in its use of hot-rod. Our protagonist is more covered, with a much stockier front. The bow wheel goes from 19 to 16 inches, and gains a second brake disc. Increased efficiency and a muscular look are therefore invited to driving. The lighthouse wanted to make itself an important place and it shows it. More imposing than the minimalist eye of the Bobber, the optics of the Speedmaster benefit from a chrome surround extending in a lateral spine and a singular light signature. The changes continue up front with a wide handlebar, contributing to a more relaxed riding position. This is also the job of the toe clips, which migrate forward, at the edge of the engine casings. The pilot thus poses in a cool attitude. With a not very high seat, fixed at 710 mm from the ground.
The tank grows a little, gaining 3 liters of capacity (12 liters in all). Then the rear part takes the full measure of a crew compared to the Bobber. The driver’s seat is more generous and gets the company of a passenger seat. The rear fender is larger and more enveloping, finishing a bike much more assertive than its predecessor in 865.
The twin is de rigueur, in its range as its category. And in 1200, we take advantage of a generous hand. The block was originally from the Bonnie T120 but it benefits from a High Torque setting introduced by the Bobber. Which translates to more torque – 10% more than the big Bonneville. And former Speedmaster owners will feel a big change. The mechanics send 42% more torque. With 10.8 mkg at 4000 rpm, the heart easily arouses all kinds of emotions. Power also goes up significantly. We had 61 horses on the 865 -> we take advantage of 77 guns on the 1200. Note that an assisted clutch reduces the effort on the lever.
Without sacrificing the look: the fins have pride of place, the water cooling is discreet, the injection is hidden behind false carbs, the twin is pleasant to look at and aggressively finished by the short and bevelled pipes of the Bobber.
And technological on top of that. Reduced to the sole result of injection on the 865, electronics are very widely present on the 1200 Speedmaster. Being from the Bonneville family, it makes sense that she collects the goodies of the siblings. There are thus a Ride-By-Wire accelerator, a disconnectable anti-skid system, ABS, LEDs for all the light appendages (headlights, indicators, plates), two injection maps (Rain or Road) and a single button speed control.
Are you ready to cruise?!? Not quite. Triumph knows how to place a beautiful catalog of accessories within its Classic range. For the 1200 Speedmaster, no less than 130 gussets will make you cringe. And for your inspiration, there are two kits provided. A “Maverick”, not at all informed by Goose but able to give a more surly profile, with a brown padded solo saddle, a flatter lowered handlebar, Vance exhausts & Black hines in addition to other “dark” details, including exhaust manifolds and oil filler cap, in addition to the passenger handle removal kit and rear fender trim.
The other kit is seen more “long-haul”, and could take over from the 865 America LT which has never landed here. Dressed in the “Highway” pack, the Speedmaster thus becomes a light Tourer with a set of waxed cotton and leather saddlebags, an adjustable GT windshield, a comfort seat, a larger matching passenger seat, as well as a set of finishes. chrome plated including engine crash bars, passenger backrest, luggage rack and polished machined oil filler cap.
The Speedmaster offers much more generous benefits with this change to 1200 cm3. Triumph didn’t just duo with its Bobber but really transformed it into a cruiser in name and presence. The muscle and the technology are there, all that’s missing is a long road ahead.
