With its MT-10, Yamaha will have taken its time to renew its offer in the segment, but finally ensured a high caliber offspring to the FZ1. And it should not be missed. In this category, the competition has set the level very high. And the MT-10 offered something to answer: the crossplane engine of the R1 (reduced to 160 hp), the chassis from the same source, the brakes too…
With the SP version, Yamaha pushes the plug far. Very far. And don’t hesitate to take coins from the R1-M. We have seen worse as a transfer. The Yamaha Superbike is enough to make a lot of trackers drool; here is that its suspensions arrive on the big roadster. The MT-10 SP has a big dynamic advantage with its duo of suspensions Öhlins driven. If the quality of Swedish elements is no longer to be demonstrated, they go to the next level here. Called E.R.S, suspenders benefit from the assistance of an SCU computer which adapts the damping in real time for increased efficiency. With the help of sensors, the SCU reads the road, analyzes the ride, and then transmits the correct compression and rebound settings to the fork and shock servomotors. Such a level of suspension is usually seen on MV-Agusta or Bimota, never on naked Japanese.
The Yamaha streetfighter could not be satisfied with the Öhlins of the R1-M. He also takes his dashboard with TFT technology. A small tablet full of colors, more pleasant to look at and distributing a lot of information. The choice of color, a sporty and mechanical Silver Blu Carbon, is inspired by the sport. Obviously, the MT-10 SP is pitted in search of performance. Unfortunately, no carbon parts on board. We would have liked a small gesture at this level, just to affirm a little more the genetic transfer from the R1-M.
Along with its top-of-the-range parts, the SP benefits from the latest developments collected by the standard MT-10. The engine manufacturers have revised the engine mapping and the selector receives the reinforcement of a QSS shifter, active when upshifting. Remember that the bike is equipped with three maps via the D-Mode system, 3-level traction control, an anti-dribble clutch, a cruise control that can be activated from 50 km / h, a great temperament and a design that appeals to everyone. It is perhaps on this one and last point that Yamaha should make an effort.
Powerful, technological, joining the top of large-caliber roadsters, the Yamaha MT-10 does justice to the SP designation. The price will reach the level of quality of the machine, without waiting for the mass blow of certain European productions.
